Edithburgh to Kemp Bay Shelter
Well the day starts with packing up the tent and all the gear to an undercover area near a caravan as it starts to rain. Its not heavy but enough to get my dry gear wet befor eI pack it all away. A good breakfast of baked beans in the Kitchen and 2 cups of tea helps me start a big day today.
The trail starts along the road out of town along the caravan park then hits a mosaic trail all the way along a path to Sultana Point. Its a bit fansy this place and continue along a road till I hit the beach after a quick toilet stop. Its not quite walking along the beach but along a trail just inland from the beach. Its nice but I have the wind turbines in front of me. The trail goes right pass them but most are off that I can see and some workmen are inside one of them. I do a bit of a bush bash away from the heavy sand at the end of the trail as I go through some scrub to hit the dirt road and one of the Walk The York shelters for morning tea. It has a couple of campers there and a couple of dozers just sitting there. It has water and a toilet nearby so fill up again then depart along the road and past another campsite, small but suitable for a tent before hitting the beach.
Along the beach to as far as possible before reaching a dirt road running along the coast and not a tree in sight on this headland. The cliff starts to get higher not by climbing up but the sea seems to get lower and lower so very flat and I can see in the distance the lighthouse at Troubridge Point. Its blowing a gale now and the only refuge from the wind for lunch is right at the door of the lighthouse.
I chill and eat for an hour with the occassional visitor in their car checking it out. As its round the wind seems to go right around it and only the door which is in a little provides relief.
Along the road for a long walk before the track along the cliff starts. There really is no track but some resemblance of where some people have tread along the edge so thats the trail I take. Its now slow going against a headwind slightly left to right so at least its not blowing me over the edge.
It takes a while before I come across the shelter below where a carpark is and a road I follow down to a left downhill steep road that takes me to the shelter and beach stairs. Its still blowing a gale although there is some sheltered spots not very good for a tent with the direction of the wind, slope and proken glass etc.
So I decide to set up the wind break groundsheet and sleep under the shelter with roacks holding each corner down. there is a bird nest at one end of the shelter so poop all over that end somehting I dont want to experinece in the middle of the night.
A short walk on the beach but its not pleasant with the wind and a bit chilly. Its been a big day even though I head up the hill and check out if there are better campspots, no theres not. So its under the shelter for the night, with a restless sleep as I think its going to rain and the wind will drive the rain into me sleeping bag. I have the tent under me as some sort of barrier but its not going to shelter me from rain.
