Foul Bay to Hillocks Drive's Butlers Beach campground
The trek all the way to Marion Bay I decided was too far so broke it up with a stop at Hillocks Drive campground for tonight. Its not well marked on the maps or Far Out other than it has a shop.
After leaving Foul Bay I decided to walk along the beach right until the last shacks and walk on their road out the front just to check out the shacks then its a right turn on the road to join up with the main South Coast Road.
Past the alternative camground at the boat ramp but it doesnt have any facilities water or toilets so I think Ive made the right choice.
Along the road and uphill with private land on the left unfortunately as we have to road walk it when along the coast would have been nicer. Then up on top of the hill its a left turn to the sea. Downhill with the farm on the right hand side and rolled up hay bails.
Once I hit the coast its fantastic, best so far. I am on cliffs and roacky shore below, the sun is out and I can see Kangaroo Island as clear as day in the distance over the sea.
There is a seat to relax on and I enjoy the views and read a little bit on the track details ahead.
I follow the cliff trail which then points down a sandhill to the beach and thats it, no more signs so I assume we follow the roacky beach area around the corner. Then it comes to a dead end so up to the cliff again and I see a sign on top.
I set up the drone for some beach shots near a sandy flat area on top of the cliffs, but I can also see a road running parallel to the cliffs.
Along the cliffs some more no trail markers then decide to road walk it, more cliff walk, beach walk at Butlers Beach then up some trail next to an accommodaiton block but realise gone too far pas tthe T interseaction to take me on a road to the campground office. Off about 1km to the office or less and check in and but up at the shop.
Back to Butlers Beach along the road and decide to camp at a sheltered area next to another fancy accommodaiton pod. Im looking for water at either pod for the morning but someone comes to the accommodaiton before I can get some more.
A beach walk and drone footage of the beach which is great and some other campers come along, one has a cut foot. I realise the following day they camped up the track towards Marion Bay.
The tent is anoyingly flapping with the wind, theres a little rain here and there so I dont get a great sleep. I think of the options. Move the tent to a more sheltered spot around the corner, sleep in the toilets or put up with it.
Around 4am I decide to move to the toilets with my sleeping bag , mat and pillow and bunker down in the cold floor for a few hours.
The following day as I have breakfast in the sheltered spot around the corner, I should have waited awhile before putting up the tent at least checked out beforehand better sites. Lesson learnt.
