Kangaroo Island
Day 1
got to the Ferry Termina about 9.35am as they were loading cars Ticket costs $60 dollars one way, bike about $20. 10 .00am departure.
2 trucks of sheep made unpleasant trip outside, feeling a little queezy. Toilets good, saw the ferry coming back. Had an English Breakfast
Penneshaw nice clean beach and great views looking back to Cape Jervis.
Started riding off through town's foreshore road, past the pub on the right at the corner , then ooking on the left at the Hall and missed the IGA on the back left so had to go back again as i reache dthe end of town. Grabbed a lunch, pretty good shop, banana and can of coke. Ate it all and headed off to the first hill climb, so steep my lungs were bursting and legs were good, hiker bike after stopping on a bench at the cemetry. While walking I was even puffing hard and trying to get my heart rate down. a heart attack was not something I was keen for. Photos at the lookout and recovery then riding up and over.
The handlebars got loose and my handlebar bag got chewed on the front tyre as I was going fast downhill.
Shitting myself on the loose handlebars as brakes were hard to reach and holding onto something less rigid is nerve racking.
Hit American beach where I was able to go off road and tighten the handlebars and adjust the bag. Continued on and hit the next beach, Baudin Beach for a look off the main road. Can camp there, toilets but couldnt see anywhere specific there to camp so might be false.
Met a lady there who has a house off grid and she was going to Kingscote for the laundry. She has moved back to the Island and runs on solar and wind.
Next stop was Prospect Hill to climb the max amoun tof stairs but great views all round and loved the view of Pennington Beach and thought Ill go there on the way back. Of course when I say that it doesnt happen, weather on way back was poor and would have given me a different perspective on what I was seeing now , glowing sand beach under a blue sky.
busy on the main road when the ferry arrives as I was just arriving at the hill. I guess if I didnt stop for food I would have missed the next ferry load of cars before turning off.
Saw the road to American River, 3 chains road on the left, goes a long straight road, hit an intersection, left to the cape and a right then a left on 3 chains road again. Comes to a T junction go left then 1km go right. 4km form th emain intersection. 1km from the actual lagoon. $17.50 booke don line at Murray Lagoon. Brand new, rainwater tanks even through I was carrying 3 litres of water.
cup of tea 4.15 after setting up the tent. Carrying rucksack which is anoying because you cant straighten your neck so Il need to readjust it to sit lower on the back.
I brought a rucksack because of all the gear I brought. Being a little colder I needed more clothes but didnt bring enough bags to put them in as Im on my gravel bike. It has a rear rack I could have brought and panniers if I realised before hand. Bike was great on the gravel roads, nice and fast. 3 litre water in rucksack, carrying 3 tubes in my frame bag, little backpack, sleeping mattress, 1 dinner, long skins bike pants, harmonica,. Its comfy on the shoulders and after the hill I put on the waist belt.
sunset at 6.30pm, new tent Z
Packs soloplex, with the pole in the middle, exxtra pegs for ground sheet, sunscreen on, headache but plenty of cups of tea to rehaydrate now but im going to the toilet every half an hour. Not enough water drank during the day.
At 6.40pm I'm in bed.
